DEI Goals Are Humane

Monica Biernat

Abstract

We know from decades of research that race, gender, and other social identities matter for the experiences we have in the world and for how others see and evaluate us. Concerns about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) begin with this knowledge and emphasize creating structures and practices that increase fairness and equity. DEI goals are fundamentally humane. They include opening doors to as many qualified people as possible, then evaluating those people fairly, providing them with opportunities to grow, and conveying that they are valued. These should be noncontroversial goals of any workplace or university.
