Dehumanizing Experiences of Genderism and Transphobia Among LGBTQ+ in Selected Filipino Queer Novels
Jimwel Gutierrez The study explores the dehumanizing experiences of genderism and transphobia among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals in Filipino novels. The study used a qualitative method of research in exploring queer people’s experiences, behavior, beliefs, opinions, and emotions in detail, which are reflected in the novels under study. The use of qualitative methods is useful for the examination of sociological phenomena and behavioral aspects. Moreover, narrative and content analyses were likewise used in understanding the narratives of characters from their own personal experiences and in determining the meanings of and relationships among words, themes, or concepts with the aims of exploring and conceptualizing human experiences as represented in textual form. Findings of the study revealed that the following are the dehumanizing experiences of genderism and transphobia among LGBTQ+ characters: emotional health—feelings of guilt, anger, disappointment, sadness, unhappiness, and embarrassment; mental health—isolation, loneliness, rejection, anxiety, obsessive thoughts, fear, despair, disgust, worries, and hurt feelings; low self-esteem—negative thinking, exclusion, uselessness, incompetence, feeling unloved, shame, feeling unwelcome, social withdrawal, and inadequacy; opportunities for growth—discrimination, bullying, name-calling, and unfair treatment; and finally, life skills—making irrational decisions.[El presente estudio explora las experiencias deshumanizadoras de generismo y transfobia entre personas lesbianas, gais, bisexuales, transgénero y queer (LGBTQ+) en novelas filipinas.
