Decolonizing Innovation: Contextual Leadership Practices and Professional Growth in the Global South

Francis Thaise A. Cimene, Danielle Rey A. Cimene

This chapter explores how decolonial frameworks, localized collaboration, and context-driven professional learning in postcolonial settings shape contemporary educational innovation and leadership practices. Anchored in the lived realities of the Global South, particularly within the Philippine higher education landscape, this study investigates how institutional innovation ecosystems are cultivated through culturally responsive and historically informed practices. Data will be drawn from selected higher education institutions (HEIs) recognized for implementing innovative strategies that respond to both global educational imperatives and local contextual challenges. By examining how collaboration across stakeholders, the influence of historical narratives, and sustained professional development initiatives contribute to transformative leadership, this chapter offers nuanced insights into the dynamic interplay between policy and practice. It aims to illustrate how these innovative practices not only foster educational reform but also challenge dominant paradigms by asserting local agency and contextual relevance. In doing so, this work contributes to a broader understanding of how meaningful change in education can emerge from the margins, offering implications for leadership and innovation that are globally informed yet locally grounded.
