Abstract

Introduction:

Non-metric Dental Crown Traits (NDCTs) can vary both within and among geo-populations. These are significant for determining and recognising an individual’s ethnicity. The “Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System” (ASUDAS) is a popular system for assessing certain dental traits.

Aim and Objectives:

The current study aims to assess the frequency of NDCTs using ASUDAS in a Lucknow district-based population in order to identify the most common features and determine any sexual dimorphism.

Materials and Methods:

Overall, 17 NDCTs were recorded and scored as per the ASUDAS protocol in each maxillary dental cast (152 males, 152 females, age 18–45 years) by the two investigators. NDCTs were tabulated, and the Chi-square test was performed for the calculation of the P value.

Results:

The results showed that the winging (UCI) (99.3%) was the most common NDCTs traits observed on maxillary dentition, Interruption Groove (ULI, P = 0.001), Tricuspid Premolar (UPM1, P = 0.000), and Hypocone (UM1, P = 0.009), Metacone (UM1, P = 0.007), Metaconule (UM2, P = 0.000), Odontome (UPM2, P = 0.009), were found to show statistically significant sexual dimorphism ( P < 0.05).

Conclusion:

The traits winging, Metacone and Hypocone demonstrate significant association with the Lucknow district-based population, whilst the traits Interruption Groove, Metacone, Metaconule, Tricuspid Premolar, and Odontome exhibit statistically highly significant sexual dimorphism in comparison to other features. It is proposed to evaluate the uniqueness of our frequencies and map these NDCTs in a large Lucknow district-based population sample.
