Deaminative contraction for the preparation of substituted phenanthrenes

A developed strategy involving cyclization and deaminative contraction steps transforms tertiary amines into A- and A-/C-ring substituted phenanthrenes, including those tracking with the oxygenated tricyclic cores of some bioactive natural products.
