Cytomegalovirus (CMV) viraemia was detected in 59% (86/146) of adults with very advanced HIV disease (CD4 <100 cells/µL) attending care in South Africa and was strongly associated with increased 6-month mortality after adjustment for CD4 count and antiretroviral therapy (adjusted odds ratio 4.02, 95% confidence interval 1.27-12.7).
