More than 50 years has passed since the conception, development and use of intravenous lters to manage patients with venous thromboembolic diseases. The role of inferior vena cava (IVC) lters is more limited now with emerging medical advances. We have learned of the short and long term complications associated with their use and in general the medical community is more cautious recommending his insertion. Still, many patients with acute thromboembolic disease with contraindications or failure to anticoagulation would benet from IVC lters. Patients with acute thromboembolism are seen across all medical elds and settings, basic knowledge of indications, complications and limitations of IVC lters and its place in the management armamentarium is important.
