Cultural Center Spaces Beyond Four-Year Institutions: Exploring Cultural Centers in Community Colleges

Susan Hua

Abstract

This chapter illuminates the development of a cultural center at a public, two-year Hispanic-Serving and Minority-Serving Institution in the Rocky Mountain region. Drawing on personal narrative and practitioner experience, Hua examines the complexities of establishing an identity-based space within the unique context of community colleges—institutions that educate the majority of first-generation and low-income students in the U.S. The chapter details the process of conceptualizing and opening the cultural center, navigating financial and spatial limitations, and creatively curating the environment to foster belonging. Hua reflects on the tensions between institutional priorities and equity-driven values, the emotional labor inherent in DEI leadership, and the symbolism of space as a vehicle for inclusion. The narrative offers insight into how community college practitioners innovate with limited resources to create transformative spaces that affirm identity, promote social justice, and respond to local community needs.
