Cultivating Soil Relations: Curators’ Introduction to (Re)mediating Soils Exhibition Catalogue

Mary Bradshaw, Josephine Mills, Mary Reid

This curators’ introduction to the exhibition catalogue section of PUBLIC 73 describes the (Re)mediating Soils art exhibition, an ongoing, multi-sited, cumulative national exhibition made possible through the art–science collaboration of the (Re)mediating Soils project, the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery (Blackfoot Territory/Lethbridge, Alberta), the Yukon Arts Centre (Whitehorse, Yukon), the Woodstock Art Gallery (Woodstock, Ontario), and the McMaster Museum of Art (Hamilton, Ontario). The exhibition features artworks created (and being created) through the (Re)mediating Soils project’s three artist residencies in Alberta, Yukon, and Ontario (2025–2026). The exhibition challenged the curators to put together a show that could travel yet be eco-friendly, span multiple locations yet be locally grounded, and accumulate over a period of several years yet remain coherent. The images in this exhibition catalogue section seek to capture outcomes from both the artist residencies and the longer-term collaboration between scientists and artists.
