Cultivating Equity in Urban Classrooms Through Care, Growth, and Possibility
William Sarfo AnkomahAbstract
In this chapter, I explore grounded practices for cultivating equity in urban classrooms through care, growth, and possibility. I draw on my experiences in classroom teaching, teacher education, and insights from relevant literature to show how inclusive instruction, culturally affirming curriculum, and relationship-based pedagogy can create meaningful opportunities for student learning and belonging. The chapter is guided by the principles of Appreciative Inquiry and grounded in a belief that students’ cultural wealth and lived realities are essential foundations for learning. I also emphasize a strength-based, humanizing stance that resists deficit narratives and centres students’ identities and cultural knowledge. I share practical strategies, including Universal Design for Learning, differentiation, affirming language, and warm demander approaches that support student success and teacher growth. Rooted in an ethic of care and a commitment to enhancing students’ potential, I invite educators to reflect on how everyday classroom practices, when shaped by trust, responsiveness, and high expectations, can make equity real and sustainable through intentional, hopeful action.
