CSDeep Learning Seminar: Connecting Students, Faculty, and Alumni to Promote a Creative Path to Success

Chao-Yang Lee, Emily Jones

What do the best college students do to cultivate their intellectual and personal development? How does learning type lead to professional success and personal fulfillment? We report the design and implementation of a seminar in which undergraduate students in Communication Sciences and Disorders collaborated with peers, faculty, and alumni to explore the meaning and application of deep learning. Participants examined how learning type shapes college experience through book discussions and conversations with alumni. Feedback from participants suggests that the book discussions and alumni conversations broadened the students’ perspective on learning type, purpose of college education, and success and failure. The combination of learning theory, personal application, and external perspectives contributed to grasping the meaning and value of deep learning in college education.
