Critiquing Normative Portrayals of Latinx/o Masculinities in Higher Education

Abraham Cervantes, Antonio Duran

Abstract

This chapter intends to disrupt the dominant and one-dimensional narratives associated with Latinx/o masculinities, positioning Latinx/o men as being synonymous with machismo. Instead, we argue for understanding Latinx/o masculinities as complex and multi-faceted, drawing upon critical frameworks (e.g., jotería studies, Chicana/Latina feminisms) to illustrate how this area of study must be viewed in more fluid ways. The chapter begins with a brief overview of Latinx/o masculinities scholarship, before then turning to a description of these critical frameworks. We conclude with several implications for scholars and practitioners who are hoping to challenge normative portrayals of Latinx/o masculinities in their work.
