Critical evaluation of ethical guidelines for doctors using social media in India
Yadukul S Social media has emerged as a powerful platform for communication, enabling both the general public and medical professionals to disseminate information, deliver healthcare-related services, promote professional expertise, and engage with a wider audience. In India as well as internationally, an increasing number of doctors are establishing a significant presence on digital platforms as social media influencers. However, many practitioners remain unfamiliar with the ethical and regulatory standards governing their online activities. This article consolidates the key ethical principles, legal provisions, and professional guidelines that medical practitioners should adhere to while using social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook for professional communication, health education, service promotion, product endorsement, and highlighting professional accomplishments. It also provides a comprehensive overview of contemporary regulatory frameworks and best practice recommendations adopted by medical regulatory authorities across different countries for the responsible use of social media by healthcare professionals. In this article, a critical analysis of the guidelines provided by apex bodies in India is discussed.
