Creative mathematics learning for talent development: professional development at an inclusive Icelandic school

Ósk Dagsdóttir

Creativity is a fundamental pillar in the Icelandic curriculum and should be fostered in all subjects. This action research took place in an inclusive Icelandic primary school and focused on a professional development programme for the teachers on creative mathematics and talent development. The programme included regular interactive workshops and coaching for teachers. Data were gathered from workshops, open surveys, and interviews with teachers. All results are anonymous and ethical procedures adhered to with clear permits. The data were analysed with qualitative methods and coded and categorised inductively. The results of the research showed that the teachers found heterogeneous groups to be a challenge but with creative focus in mathematics education the learners were able to reach deeper understanding through collaboration, open-ended problems, and hands-on work. It is of vital importance to support schools and teachers towards more creative learning in mathematics so that all students can reach their potential.
