Creating Passionate Employees: The Power of Psychological Diversity Climate in Promoting Citizenship Behaviors
Michael D. Caligiuri, Shashan Bao, Phillip M. JollyThis research note explores how psychological diversity climate influences interpersonal citizenship behaviors among hospitality professionals, focusing on the mediating role of harmonious passion. Drawing on self-determination theory, we contend that an environment characterized by fairness and inclusiveness not only boosts intrinsic motivation but also increases harmonious passion among employees. This motivational state, in turn, encourages discretionary, interpersonal helping behaviors known as organizational citizenship behavior. Using a sample of 440 U.S. hospitality employees recruited through a Qualtrics panel, all hypotheses were supported. These findings contribute to the extant literature by clarifying a key motivational mechanism linking psychological diversity climate to interpersonal citizenship behaviors.
