Coronavirus Disease Infection Severity Correlation with Interleukin-22 Polymorphism among Iraqi Patients

Background:
Numerous researched genes’ single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been linked to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) severity.
Objectives:
This study was conducted to determine whether the COVID-19 severity is correlated with the polymorphisms of two SNPs (rs1416125928 and rs2227485) in the interleukin (IL)-22 gene and, IL-22 level. Investigations were also conducted on how these polymorphisms affected IL-22 levels.
Materials and Methods:
For the detection of SARS-CoV-2, reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used. Genomic DNA was isolated from blood samples for genotyping and ELISA tests to measure IL-22 levels. Polymerase chain reaction was used for genotyping.
Results:
The findings showed that patients’ levels of IL-22 considerably rise when compared to the control group of healthy individuals (
Conclusion:
The study described here also demonstrated that IL-22 SNPs can alter IL-22 serum levels. The findings indicated that rs1416125928 and rs2227485 were active polymorphisms with no potential to influence IL-22 production and that there was no link between SNPs and blood levels of IL-22. Additionally, research was required to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that connected SNPs with IL-22 expression, the emergence of acute respiratory distress syndrome susceptibility, and prognosis. Our conclusions are limited by the sample size.
