Conversion of CO2 to CO by Solvated Electrons in Molten Salts

Xueqi Pang, Donald R. Sadoway

Abstract

We demonstrate CO2-to-CO conversion in a metal–molten salt solution containing solvated electrons generated by dissolving Ba in molten BaCl2. Rather than being confined to the electrode–electrolyte interface as in conventional electrochemical CO2 reduction, the process occurs throughout the molten salt and is sustained by regeneration of solvated electrons involving electrodeposition of liquid Ba metal followed by its dissolution.
