Mitanshu Yadav, Hanuman Lal Verma

Inland fisheries are a vital part of the country's fisheries sector, significantly contributing to the national economy and supporting the livelihoods of millions. India is the second largest fish producing nation, depend widely on its inland resources. Among the leading inland fish producing states, Chhattisgarh ranks 6th in inland fish production. Despite its significant contribution to inland fish production, fish farmers in the state face several challenges that hinders the adoption of improved fish farming practices. This study has been carried out in Dhamtari district of Chhattisgarh to identify and categorize the key constraints faced by fish farmers in adopting improved fish farming practices. A total of 150 fish farmers across four blocks of the district were selected by using a proportionate stratified random sampling method and the data was collected by personal interview method with the help of interview schedule. Findings reveal that extension constraints includes ‘inadequate training programmes on fish culture’ and ‘limited number of demonstrations’ ranked highest (MPS=61.20), followed by technological and financial constraints, while social and climatic factors had a least impact in adoption of improved fish farming practices, scoring below average MPS=47.87 among major constraints. Need-based trainings combined with ICT-based technical support systems and financial aid such as Kisan Credit Card and subsidies in infrastructure development will improve the sustainable fish production in the study area. Extension agencies should organize awareness programs focused on financial schemes, value addition of fish and fisheries products and sustainable aquaculture methods.
