Connecting knowledge: a review of knowledge networks in healthcare organizations

Organizational cooperation networks promote knowledge creation and sharing, enhancing performance. This study aims to explore knowledge networks in healthcare organizations (KNHOs) and their impact on care delivery efficiency.
Design/methodology/approach
A systematic literature review was conducted through the Web of Science database, across a comprehensive selection of 36 journals. A total of 77 articles met the inclusion criteria for analysis, and the main research agenda was built through content analysis.
Findings
The findings reveal that KNHOs manifest in six distinct clusters: interorganizational networks; innovation and adoption; leadership and management; technology adoption and implementation; knowledge management and exchange; and boundary-spanning coordination and organizational learning.
Practical implications
This study suggests that healthcare managers should pay closer attention to the design and governance of knowledge networks, both within and across organizational boundaries. Supporting relational coordination, inter-professional exchange and cross-boundary learning mechanisms may strengthen knowledge mobilization and improve organizational responsiveness in complex care environments.
Originality/value
In this study, a new and innovative framework about knowledge networks in health organizations is proposed. The authors present future research directions, taking as a starting point the variety of gaps and limitations presented by the analyzed studies, which open opportunities for future research lines.
