Configuring a Disability-Inclusive Purpose Ecosystem
Mukta KulkarniAbstract
This chapter calls for the creation of a disability-inclusive purpose ecosystem, drawing on examples from India to illustrate how organizations can collaborate to promote disability-inclusive development across education, employment, health, and sports. An ecosystem approach—defined as a network of interdependent but independent actors working toward shared goals—enables scalable and replicable inclusion efforts beyond individual organizations. Through analysis of 71 leading Indian organizations identified via diverse metrics (e.g., market capitalization, diversity rankings, innovation), the chapter highlights replicable practices across partnerships with non-governmental organizations, government bodies, and community institutions. These include inclusive education programs, accessible vocational skilling, sensitization services, medical care, and disability-inclusive sports. The ecosystem model not only empowers persons with disabilities but also benefits partner organizations and broader communities, aligning inclusion with sustainability goals. This approach complements workplace-focused inclusion research by emphasizing systemic, cross-sector collaboration. At a time when diversity and inclusion efforts face increasing resistance, purpose-driven ecosystems offer a compelling framework for advancing equity, interdependence, and social justice.
