Conducting systematic reviews in Applied Linguistics

Emily Oxley

Abstract

As the number of systematic reviews in the field of Applied Linguistics increases, so do the expectations around the quality and rigour. However, conducting a rigorous systematic review that is of a high methodological quality involves collaboration, nuanced understanding, and methodological challenges. In this book chapter, I will reflect on the experiences of conducting a systematic review on the effectiveness of language and literacy interventions for children with English as an Additional Language (EAL;

Oxley & De Cat, 2019
). I discuss some of the main steps of the review process: developing the search strategy, screening and selecting studies, and assessing their quality. I will also share the lessons learned, the difficulties encountered, and reflect on what authors may do differently in the future. These reflections can provide useful insights and guidance for other researchers who are planning or conducting systematic reviews in Applied Linguistics.
