Computed Tomography-based Three-dimensional Morphometric Analysis of Orbital Dimensions and Indices in a Tribal Population of Arunachal Pradesh, Northeast India
Manumati Munglang, Taling Mari, Omem Badu, Tojum GongoBackground:
Morphometric parameters of the orbit show a large variability depending on sex, age, and ethnicity, with important implications for craniosurgical planning, forensic identification, and anthropological studies. However, normative data based on three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) for the tribal populations of northeast India are still scarce.
Objectives:
The present investigation aimed to quantify orbital dimensions in a tribal population of Arunachal Pradesh using 3D-CT imaging, assess age-and sex-related variations, and establish population-specific reference parameters.
Materials and Methods:
A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed on archived cephalic CT scans of the subjects aged 5–78 years with indigenous tribal population of Arunachal Pradesh. The study included subjects from multiple indigenous tribal communities of Arunachal Pradesh, as documented in hospital demographic records, and specific tribal affiliations were not consistently available in archived records. There were 487 subjects (244 females and 243 males, aged 5–78 years). Bilateral measurements of the orbital height, orbital width, interorbital distance (IOD), and biorbital width were taken from three-dimensional reconstructed images using established anatomic landmarks. The calculation was performed for the orbital index for each subject. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, Student’s
Results:
Orbital dimensions were significantly greater in males than in females (
Conclusion:
This study presents CT-derived normative data of orbital dimensions in a tribal population of Arunachal Pradesh with a pronounced sexual dimorphism and specific age-related changes with clinical and forensic relevance.
