Background
Vaccinology has evolved from a cornerstone of infectious disease control into a dynamic field of translational research. Despite its scientific relevance, it remains adversely affected by misinformation and limited health literacy. Also, Italy has yet to fill a training and informational gap on this matter. To address this issue, we set out to design an integrated master’s program in vaccinology that combines scientific excellence with a strong focus on communication and global health perspectives.
Methods
The program was structured after a comprehensive review of the main application areas of vaccinology and of comparable educational experience in Europe and worldwide. The resulting curriculum was submitted to a multidisciplinary panel of experts in public health and vaccinology, including professionals from clinical and primary care settings, Health Technology Assessment and health policy. Following a first evaluation round and subsequent revisions, the program underwent a second expert review. The final version of the curriculum integrated all comments and recommendations provided across the two rounds.
Results
The finalized curriculum comprises the following topics: immunology and epidemiology; vaccines’ history, platforms, composition, and routes of administration; vaccine development, evaluation, regulatory approval, and pharmacovigilance; health policies; immunization strategies for target populations; international vaccination programs; Global Health and One Health approaches; scientific communication and vaccine hesitancy; and emerging innovations in vaccinology. The program also integrates practical activities, case study discussions, and simulation exercises.
Conclusions
The resulting Master’s program is comprehensive and multidisciplinary. It provides a thorough and integrated perspective on vaccinology, aligned with expert consensus and responsive to the competencies required to meet current and future immunization challenges.
Key messages
• A holistic approach to vaccinology is vital to bridge post-pandemic skill gaps, ensuring experts are ready to lead innovation and strengthen healthcare system resilience.
• By bridging the gap between clinical research and field implementation, this program empowers leaders to drive evidence-based immunization policies and enhance global health outcomes.
