Compatibility of closed system transfer devices with hazardous drug vials wrapped in vial protect pack shrink tack labels: Comparative evaluation between experienced pharmacists and pharmacy students

Background

Practical fitting and handling compatibility between Closed System Transfer Devices (CSTDs) and hazardous drug vials wrapped in Vial Protect Pack (VPP) shrink tack labels has not been sufficiently characterized in routine oncology pharmacy practice. This exploratory study aimed to compare user-rated compatibility and usability between experienced pharmacists and pharmacy students and to identify devices that may merit particular attention in novice training.

Methods

Five CSTDs were evaluated with ten hazardous drug vials wrapped in VPP shrink tack labels. Three experienced pharmacists and three fourth-year pharmacy students with no prior CSTD experience assessed compatibility, visibility, stability, operability, and insertability using a 0–3 rating scale.

Results

All five CSTDs could be successfully attached to the vials. Equashield and Chemfort demonstrated consistently high scores in both groups. The largest between-group difference was observed for ChemoLock universal type, particularly in operability and insertability. PhaSeal also showed lower scores in both groups compared to the other devices.

Conclusions

Although all CSTDs could be used with hazardous drug vials wrapped in VPP shrink tack labels, user-rated usability differed by device and experience level. These findings highlight the potential importance of device-specific training, particularly for ChemoLock universal type.
