COMPARISON OF VARIOUS SCORING SYSTEMS IN PREDICTING MORTALITY IN COVID -19 INFECTION

In the context of COVID-19, the assessment of patient severity relies on various scoring systems, such as qSOFA, CURB-65, and APACHE II. However, APACHE II's inclusion of acute physiology and chronic health evaluation complicates timely identication of high-risk patients. Our study, conducted at PRS Hospital, Trivandrum, aimed to assess the association between APACHE II scores and in-hospital mortality in COVID-19 patients. Additionally, we compared the mortality-predicting abilities of APACHE II with qSOFA, CURB-65, and modied CHA2DS2-VASc scores. The retrospective, single-centered, cross-sectional study enrolled approximately 200 ICU-admitted COVID-19 patients above 18 years. Comprehensive data, including medical histories and diagnostic tests, were collected. Using MDCalc calculator, APACHE II, qSOFA, CURB-65, and CHA2DS2-VASc scores were calculated. Our ndings suggest that while all scoring systems demonstrated good predictive capacity, APACHE II exhibited a higher predictive capacity compared to CURB-65, qSOFA, and CHA2DS2-VASc scores. The study emphasizes the signicance of an effective and timely scoring system, particularly in the context of COVID-19, for better patient management and outcomes.
