BACKGROUND:

Migraine is a prevalent psychosomatic disorder with psychological or neurological mechanisms, causing changes in neurochemistry and neurophysiology. This study investigated the comparative effect of emotion-focused therapy (EFT) and cognitive rehabilitation (CR) based on Rehacom software on emotional and cognitive components of migraine patients.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

This clinical trial was conducted on 45 migraine patients in Yazd in 2024. They were randomly assigned into three groups: the EFT group that received 8 weeks of interventional sessions, each lasting 90 min, the CR group receiving intervention for 3 weeks, 8 sessions, each session lasting 20 min, and one control group. They were evaluated before and after treatment. The subjects completed the Emotional Beliefs Questionnaire, the Perth Empathy Scale, the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale, and the Visual Analogue Scale. Data were analyzed using Kolmogorov–Smirnov, Levene’s test, the Lambda–Wilks test, Homogeneity of regression slope and Bonferroni in SPSS 23 (0.05).

RESULTS:

The findings showed that EFT and CR were effective in improving cognitive and emotional components ( P < 0.05). So, EFT in improving emotional beliefs and empathy ( P = 0.01) and CR in improving the attention variable are more effective ( P = 0.09).

CONCLUSION:

According to the results, EFT and CR lead to an improvement in emotional and cognitive components in female migraine patients. Therefore, it is recommended to use this therapy.
