Pyrazinium chlorochromate (PzCC) and 3,5-dimethyl pyrazolium chlorochromate (DMPCC) are widely used by many researchers in organic chemistry. The oxidation of unsaturated alcohols has been investigated by various authors. The oxidation mode differs for different complexed Cr (VI) compounds. Here, we compare the oxidation of unsaturated alcohols, namely, allyl alcohol, crotyl alcohol, and cinnamyl alcohol, by PzCC and DMPCC. This comparative study can be done by spectrophotometrically. These reactions obey first-order kinetics in respect of the oxidant and substrate and fractional-order kinetics in regard to the hydrogen ion concentration; however, the reaction rates are different from each other. From the temperature effect, various thermodynamic parameters have been calculated using Eyring’s equation. Isokinetic temperatures were determined from an isokinetic plot, i.e., entropy-controlled oxidation for unsaturated alcohols by PzCC and enthalpy-controlled oxidation for unsaturated alcohols by DMPCC.
