Comparative evaluation of the effect of aging on some properties of two fiber-reinforced composite resins

Kholood El Sayed Morsy, Gehan A. Elolimy

Aim

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of thermocycling aging on color stability, surface microhardness, and biaxial flexural strength of ever X Posterior compared with ever X Flow short fiber-reinforced composites (SFRCs).

Materials and Methods

A total of 120 disc specimens, 60 for each material were fabricated using a specially designed mold, divided into two equal groups. Group I: ever X Posterior SFRC, and group II: ever X Flow SFRC. The restorative materials were applied according to the manufactures instructions. For each material, half of disc specimens ( n = 30) were subjected to thermocycling for 1000 cycles from 5 to 55°C with 30 s dwell time, and 15 s transfer time. The tested resin materials were evaluated for color stability, surface microhardness, and the biaxial flexural strength. All data was collected, tabulated, and statistically analyzed using SPSS, version 30.

Results

Ever X Posterior exhibited higher mean value of color change (2.33 ± 0.547) than ever X Flow (1.72 ± 0.308) with statistically significant differences between them after thermocycling ( P = 0.006). Surface microhardness, and biaxial flexural strength mean values were decreased upon thermocycling in both materials when compared to baseline (before thermocycling) with no statistically significant difference within each material ( P < 0.05).

Conclusion

Within the limitations of this in vitro study, it can be concluded that thermocycling produced reductions in microhardness and biaxial flexural strength and induced color changes; with ever X Posterior exhibited higher surface microhardness, while ever X Flow showed better color stability and biaxial flexural strength than ever X posterior.
