Comparative Evaluation of Point Contact Fixator and Locking Compression Plates for the Repair of Tibial Fracture in Goats
Mallikarjuna, Manjunath Patil, D. Dilip Kumar, B. Bhagavantappa, K.C. MallinathA clinical study was undertaken to evaluate and compare the efficacy of the point contact fixator (PC-Fix) plate and the locking compression plate (LCP) in stabilising tibial fractures in goats. Twelve goats were randomly assigned to two groups of six each. Gr I fractures were stabilised with a 3.5 mm PC-Fix plate using non-locking cortical screws, while Gr II fractures were stabilised with 3.5 mm LCP plates and locking screws. Clinical, radiographic and biochemical evaluations were performed on days 0, 15, 30 and 60. Weight-bearing improved progressively in both groups, with all goats achieving grade I lameness and normal limb function by day 60. Radiographs confirmed stable alignment and progressive callus formation, though LCP-treated goats showed comparatively less callus. Serum alkaline phosphatase increased significantly (P<0.05) on day 30 and normalised on day 60, while serum calcium and phosphorus levels remained within normal ranges. It was inferred that the LCP demonstrated superior implant stability, fewer complications and more favourable healing compared to the PC-Fix plate.
