Comparative Evaluation of Mechanical Performance and Physical Properties of Natural and Artificial Limra Stones

Özlem Özkan Önür
This study comparatively evaluates the suitability of natural and artificial Limra stones for architectural applications using laboratory-prepared specimens. Breaking load and flexural strength, also defined as modulus of rupture, were determined to characterize mechanical performance, while density and water absorption were measured to assess physical properties. Natural Limra stone exhibited an average breaking load of 3354 N and an average flexural strength of 4.15 N/mm². Artificial Limra stone exhibited an average breaking load of 2065 N and an average flexural strength of approximately 2.56 N/mm². The average densities of the natural and artificial stones were 2203 kg/m³ and 587.5 kg/m³, respectively. Their average water-absorption values were 1.5% and approximately 8.7%, respectively. Under the tested conditions, natural Limra stone exhibited higher mechanical resistance and substantially lower water absorption, while artificial Limra stone provided a considerable weight advantage. The results suggest that artificial Limra stone may be considered for non-structural interior cladding and decorative applications. However, its suitability for exterior or moisture-exposed environments should be verified through additional durability tests. Future studies should investigate larger specimen groups and examine the effects of mixture proportions, lightweight-aggregate type, compaction, curing conditions, and protective treatments on the performance of artificial Limra stone.
