ABSTRACT

Introduction:

Bleaching teeth is becoming a more popular dental procedure due to possibility of promoting faster tooth whitening with highly concentrated chemicals in-office method has become more popular than home use.

Aim:

To compare and evaluate the effectiveness of two different in-office vital bleaching agents in treating dental fluorosis.

Methodology:

40 subjects were randomly divided into two groups, according to the bleaching agent used: 35% Hydrogen Peroxide and 35% Carbamide Peroxide. The evaluation was completed by two blinded, calibrated evaluators who compared the baseline color of the maxillary anterior teeth with a value-oriented shade guide after each period. The patients recorded the tooth sensitivity on a 0 – 4 scale before and immediately, 3 days, 7 days, and 15 days after the bleaching procedure. Data on sensitivity level were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney and data from the color evaluation were subjected to Wilcoxon signed-rank and Friedman tests.

Results:

The degree of teeth sensitivity was nearly eliminated with the use of CP, while the difference between the bleaching agents disappeared after 24 hours. There was no significant difference between both bleaching agents in tooth whitening. CP provided less sensitivity when compared to HP, but there were no differences in comfort of the techniques used.

Conclusion:

Both bleaching agents resulted in high levels of patient satisfaction. CP resulted in reduced tooth sensitivity when compared to HP.
