Abstract:

Background:

Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a commonly encountered problem. It can be treated by two approaches: first by occluding the dentinal tubules and second by reducing nerve excitability, or by a combination of both mechanisms. Several products such as sodium fluoride, potassium nitrate, strontium chloride, stannous fluoride, cavity varnishes, lasers, and adhesive resins have been used. In the present study, the desensitizing effect of 10% potassium nitrate was evaluated and compared with commercially available Gluma ® desensitizer.

Materials and Methods:

A total of 94 subjects suffering from DH, aged 35–65 years, were selected and randomly assigned to one of two groups using the coin toss method. Both the groups underwent scaling at baseline. 10% potassium nitrate was applied to patients in Group A, while Gluma ® primer was applied to Group B. The clinical parameter evaluated was the Verbal Rating Scale (VRS) at baseline, 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd , and 4 th weeks.

Results:

The outcomes were tabulated and statistically analyzed. Both the groups showed a significant improvement in the VRS score, and a statistically significant difference ( P < 0.001) was observed within the groups. Intergroup comparisons showed that there was no statistically significant difference in mean VRS score between Group A and B at baseline, 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd , and 4 th weeks. 10% potassium nitrate and Gluma ® primer were found to be equally effective in lowering the DH.

Conclusion:

10% potassium nitrate primer was equally effective as Gluma ® desensitizer in treating DH.
