Community Archaeology and Educational Opportunities at Tel Esur

ABSTRACT

The Tel Esur Community Archaeology Project, an educational excavation of a Middle Bronze Age and Iron Age site located in the northern Sharon Plain of Israel, has engaged over 5,000 local youths from diverse backgrounds in hands-on archaeological fieldwork since 2010. The project successfully integrates educational archaeology with community involvement, offering participants the opportunity to engage with their cultural heritage while fostering collaboration. Through a structured program based on comparable projects throughout Israel and the eastern Mediterranean, the project has developed a methodology for managing large numbers of young volunteers in the field. Although the project has achieved notable success in raising self-esteem and heritage awareness among the participants, the long-term impact on the site and the local community is at present unclear, highlighting the need for continued discussion on the future of community-based archaeological initiatives and the role of archaeologists in community outreach.
