In 1963, it was granted province status, which subsequently became autonomous. In 1974, Kosovo and Metohija formed their own institutions. During the breakup of the SFRY, a New World Order was created. Religion had a major impact on the late 1980s politics. The Yugoslav state was disintegrating. The SPS, which succeeded the communists in Serbia in the 1990s, was helpless against the US preservation policy of the status of Kosovo and Metohija. In 2000, the DOS government that followed, or the SNS government post-2012, was also powerless. The US, which supports Muslims in Europe, in accordance with its national interests, intervened in the Kosovo crisis following the collapse of the SFRY. It backed the Muslim Albanians both politically before 1999 and militarily with the NATO intervention in 1999, and politically after that by recognising the independence of Kosovo and Metohija in 2008.
