Commentary on “Amelanotic Melanoma With Features of Keratinocytic Tumor on Reflectance Confocal Microscopy”
Ana Danko, Heather M. Zimmerman, David Elpern, Ata Moshiri, Douglas JohnsonABSTRACT
As demonstrated by Chuchvara et al. and a recent clinical case, amelanotic melanoma (AM) presents a diagnostic challenge for both clinicians and pathologists. AM is frequently clinically misdiagnosed due to its lack of pigmentation and clinical overlap with keratinocytic tumors and may mimic these neoplasms despite evaluation with advanced imaging techniques. These cases emphasize the importance of clinicopathologic correlation in lesions that are clinically amelanotic but histologically confirmed as melanoma.
