To assess the efficacy and safety of a novel technique of combining silicone oil removal (SOR) and endo-cyclophotocoagulation using the endolaser of the vitrectomy machine in patients with silicone induced glaucoma.
Design
Prospective interventional pilot study.
Patients and methods
Ten eyes with silicone induced glaucoma underwent combined SOR and endo-cyclophotocoagulation using the endolaser probe of the vitrectomy machine. The extent of application was determined by the morphology of the ciliary processes (180, 270, or 360°) and a power of 400 mW, increased or decreased in increments of 50 mW, until slight blanching of the ciliary process was used. Detailed data of the vitrectomy surgery (indication, silicone oil type, duration,…etc.) were retrieved. Pre- and postoperative intraocular pressure, best corrected visual acuity, and number of antiglaucoma medications were recorded at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months postoperative. Intra- or postoperative complications were recorded.
Results
Seven cases had 180°, two had 270°, and one patient had 360° laser application. Intraocular pressure and number of antiglaucoma medications reduction was achieved in 9 patients, with a statistically significant difference at the 6-month follow-up (
Conclusion
Combined SOR with endolaser cyclophotocoagulation using the conventional vitrectomy machine laser probe is a promising approach silicone induced glaucoma patients, with high efficacy and minimal complications.
