Combating Invisibility: Strategies of Black Women Leaders in Research Administration
Rashonda HarrisAbstract
Black women leaders in higher education research administration often face systemic invisibility rooted in the intersection of race and gender. This chapter explores the lived experiences of Black women professionals navigating marginalization in predominantly white academic institutions. Through case study analysis, the chapter examines strategies these leaders use to assert presence, build credibility, and influence institutional culture. Drawing from Black feminist thought, the chapter reveals how emotional labor, identity negotiation, and resilience contribute to leadership effectiveness while highlighting the need for structural reform in academic environments.
