Coloring and Enhancing UV Protection Property of Hemp/Cotton Fabric Through a Sustainable Approach

Burcu Sancar
The present paper is purposed to obtain high UV protection properties, as well as coloring for hemp/cotton fabrics with a sustainable approach. With this scope, the raw hemp/cotton fabrics were pretreated with only enzyme usage and then dyed with water extract of pomegranate peel waste. While the hydrophilicity and whiteness values of the pretreated fabrics were investigated, CIEL*a*b* color value, color strength (K/S), color fastness (to washing, perspiration, rubbing, and light), bursting strength, and UV protective properties of the dyed fabrics were researched. In addition, the fabrics were subjected to 5 repeated washing processes to investigate the effect of the washing process on the UV protection properties of the fabrics. The results show that it is possible to give high UV protection properties to textiles while dyeing with pomegranate peel extract (PPE), and the UV protection properties are durable after 5 repeated washings.
