Coaching Collaboratively for a Greater Good with the Planet as a Stakeholder

Julie Collings

The growing urgency of the climate crisis raises questions about the role of coaching beyond individual development, yet empirical research remains limited. This study explored how eco-engaged coaches embed climate responsibility into their role. Using Constructivist Grounded Theory, 13 coaches were interviewed. Findings suggest climate responsibility is embedded within a holistic worldview characterised by interconnectedness, ecocentrism and global citizenship. This is reflected in a values-led, emergent, integrative and relational way of being that extends coaching beyond the individual while maintaining client autonomy. An emergent model suggests that for these coaches, coaching is understood as a collaborative process for social good, with the planet as a stakeholder.
