Background:
Buthūr
(macules/pustules) are a common symptom of many skin diseases, often causing social distress. These skin alterations require effective treatment, but a safe and proven cure has not yet been found. Ongoing research aims to develop natural, low-side-effect, cost-effective, and widely accepted treatments. The Unani System of Medicine, with its centuries-old therapeutic remedies, offers potential solutions. This study aimed to validate two Unani formulations –
Iṭrīfal Shāhtara
and
Sharbat ‘Unnāb
– which are commonly used for treating
Buthūr
but lack scientific validation.
Materials and Methods:
The study was conducted at the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine, Bhadrak, Odisha, involving 103 patients.
Iṭrīfal Shāhtara
(5 g) was administered orally with water twice a day, while
Sharbat ‘Unnāb
(20 ml) was given similarly for 21 days. Clinical assessments were made at baseline and on days 7, 14, and 21 using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS).
Results:
Both formulations provided relief in 91.26% of cases, with significant clinical improvement and changes in VAS score. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference at the 5% level using one-way analysis of variance.
Conclusion:
The study concludes that the drugs
Iṭrīfal Shāhtara
and
Sharbat ‘Unnāb
are effective in treating
Buthūr
, improving symptoms without side effects. The treatments were well tolerated, and no adverse effects were observed during the study.
