Clinical Spectrum of Blepharokeratoconjunctivitis in the Pediatric Age Group: Early Diagnosis and Management to Prevent Lifelong Morbidity

Abstract

The clinical spectrum and severity of blepharokeratoconjunctivitis (BKC) in pediatric age is diverse. Pediatric BKC remains an underdiagnosed entity and can be confused with other clinical conditions, such as allergic and herpetic eye disease. Additionally, there can be delays in diagnosis and management due to difficulty in evaluating young children. Here, we describe three female patients (Patient 1, Patient 2, and Patient 3), aged 11, 3, and 4 years, who presented with a varied spectrum and severity of the condition. The challenges in management and various therapeutic measures to control the disease entity are discussed. Prompt recognition with early diagnosis and long-term management is crucial to limit corneal scarring and lifelong morbidity associated with the condition.
