Abstract

INTRODUCTION:

Intratonsillar abscess is a rare disease resulting from acute bacterial infection of the tonsils. It can be correlated with Talugataroga (diseases of the palate), Tundikeri . The present case report highlights the therapeutic management of an intratonsillar abscess through Ayurvedic intervention.

PATIENT’S INFORMATION:

A 27-year-old female patient presented with complaints of pain and swelling in the throat, cough, and difficulty in swallowing for 2 months. On oral endoscopy examination, a focal accumulation of pale yellow pus was observed on the left tonsil. The condition was diagnosed as an intratonsillar abscess ( Tundikeri ).

THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTION:

The patient was treated with oral Ayurvedic formulations, including Talishadi Churna, Lakshmivilas Rasa, Godanti Bhasma , and Kanchanara Guggulu . Local treatment included Gandusha (~retention of medicated liquid in the oral cavity until lacrimation or for approximately 10 min) using a combination of Panchavalkala Kwatha , Apamarga Kshara , and Arimedadi Taila for 30 days.

RESULTS:

After completion of treatment, significant clinical improvement was observed. Pain on the Visual Analog Scale reduced from 3 to 0, tonsillar inflammation reduced from grade 2 to 0, dysphagia improved from grade 2 to 0, and the abscess resolved completely.

CONCLUSION:

The Ayurvedic treatment protocol effectively managed the intratonsillar abscess without surgical intervention. No recurrence was observed during the 1-month follow-up period.
