Advancements in restorative dentistry have expanded treatment possibilities for children, yet the need for materials that balance strength, esthetics, and clinical practicality remains.
Aim
This study was carried out to evaluate and compare the performance of Zirconomer and glass ionomer cements (GIC) in Class II restorations of primary molars.
Patients and methods
A randomized split-mouth clinical trial was designed using 60 primary molars from 30 children aged 4–8, divided into two groups. Group I: 30 primary molars were restored with Zirconomer, while Group II: 30 primary molars were restored with Medifil, a GIC. They were evaluated at baseline, third, sixth, and ninth months using the United States of Public Health Service Modified Ryge Criteria for anatomic form, marginal integrity and marginal discoloration.
Results
There was no statistically significant difference in anatomic form, marginal integrity and marginal discoloration between Zirconomer and Medifil groups through follow-up periods.
Conclusion
Both Zirconomer and conventional GIC demonstrated satisfactory clinical performance over the evaluation period.
