Child Welfare and Well-Being
Susan C MappAbstract
Different issues that violate the Convention on the Rights of the Child are discussed in this chapter. Child labor is explained, together with a discussion of Bolivia’s controversial child labor law. The issues of children on the street and child maltreatment are explored in different cultural contexts. The controversies around orphanages and international adoption are discussed, together with how voluntourism has negatively impacted these children, and the related controversy regarding commercial global surrogacy is explained. The chapter explains what is means to be stateless and why children may be stateless, and discusses who has access to education and how much. The Country Profile explores children in need of parental care in China, including the rise and fall of international adoption—why so many children had been available and how the issue has shifted in the past decade.
