Chester Beatty Library MS T 434: A Seventeenth-Century Ottoman Calendrical and Astrological Compendium

Florence Somer
The Ottoman calendrical manuscript preserved as Chester Beatty Library MS T 434 is remarkable for the variety of textual, visual, and computational features it bringstogether within a single codex. Generally catalogued as a taqwīm or astrological almanac, this seventeenth-century manuscript combines several characteristic featuresof the Ottoman calendrical tradi-tion, including a rūznāme (perpetual calendar), ġurre-nāme, an operational volvelle, and an extensive visual programme, within a single codex. This research note introduces the manuscript and examines the features that distinguish it within the Ottoman calendrical tradition. It also highlights the diversity of Ottoman calendrical manuscripts and demonstrates how different textual forms, computational practices, and visual elements could be integrated within a single calendrical manuscript.
