Chemosensation
S P MackenzieAbstract
This chapter examines what RAF aircrew experienced before, during, and after aerial operations in chemosensory terms. It examines the nature of and reactions to both pre-operational and post-operational meals as well as in-flight rations in different active theatres of war. It explores the incidence and emotional effect of the taste and smell of smoking cigarettes as well as alcohol use. It analyses the consequences of the absence of a chemosensory signature associated with cylinder oxygen plus reactions to the taste and smell of oxygen masks. It discusses the use and effects of amphetamine tablets. It chronicles the different scents associated with aircraft, that of explosive propellants, and the varying emotional reactions thereto.
