Abstract

Clays from Kouoptamo in West Cameroon were investigated to evaluate their suitability for ceramic applications. The four representative samples (ABK, AJK, ARK and AVK) from the study area were characterized. The clays had remarkably distinct chemical, structural and particle-size characteristics, resulting in different densification behaviours and physical and mechanical properties. ABK (the most kaolinite-rich sample) demonstrated the lowest compressive strength (≈25 MPa) and relatively high porosity (38%) after firing at 1200°C, indicating potential for refractory applications, whereas AJK (the most goethite-rich sample) achieved the highest bulk density (2.11 g cm –3 ) and compressive strength (≈50 MPa) at the same temperature, rendering it potentially useful for roofing tiles and bricks. ARK and AVK showed moderate densification and mechanical properties. The Kouoptamo clays may be suitable for a range of ceramic applications, from whiteware products to roofing tiles, depending on their composition and firing behaviour.
