Chapter 11. Reflexive Thoughts on Some Ethical Issues in Ethnoarchaeological/Archaeological Ethnographic Research

Hamish A. Forbes

ABSTRACT

Issues and dilemmas in the ethical treatment of communities when conducting and publishing ethnoarchaeological research in modern European countries are explored in case studies from Greece and Italy. First, I discuss how to define and address relevant host “communities” within the context of multiple and crosscutting community identities; second, I examine issues in sharing and giving back knowledge that communities do not wish to know or acknowledge, or that they know but do not wish the rest of the world to know.
