Changing the Characteristics of a Speedway Engine by Micro-Slide Burnishing of Piston Rings

Andrzej Zbrowski, Slawomir Wos, Waldemar Koszela

This article presents a method to increase the power of internal combustion engines, particularly those used in speedway racing. The method involves texturing the sliding surface of the compression rings using micro-sliding burnishing. The issue of the operation of speedway engines and their specific design features is discussed. The results of the surface topography studies of rings modified using the developed method are presented. The identified problems associated with burnishing the sliding surfaces of the rings are characterized. The results of verification tests conducted on real-world objects under laboratory and race-track conditions are presented. The developed method allows for increasing the power of a motorcycle speedway engine.
