Case overview/synopsis
India’s packaged food industry is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by rising health awareness, changing consumption behaviour and increasing demand for clean-label products. In this context, The Whole Truth (TWT), a D2C health-food brand founded in 2019, has positioned itself around the principle of radical transparency, offering products free from preservatives, additives and hidden ingredients, while actively educating consumers about misleading food marketing practices. The case traces the company’s evolution through 2025 as it scales distribution, expands product lines and attracts significant investor interest in a competitive FMCG environment.
The case centres on a strategic growth challenge: how a mission-driven clean-label brand can achieve market expansion and improved financial performance without diluting its core promise of honesty and product integrity. Students are required to evaluate strategic pathways that balance pricing, costs, margins, distribution choices and brand values in a price-sensitive and rapidly evolving category.
This case is designed for courses in marketing strategy, brand management and entrepreneurship. It provides an opportunity to analyse ethical branding, purpose-driven value propositions, omnichannel growth models and the financial pressures associated with scaling consumer startups in emerging markets. Learners will assess the sustainability of radical transparency as a differentiated competitive strategy and develop recommendations for future growth.
